Signal Peak DNS Server Fix for June 5, 2009

These instructions will help you to configure your network to adapt to the new required DNS settings. To find which set of instructions to use, determine whether you have a router and what kind. You likely have a router if: To find which brand of router you have trace the ethernet cable which is either black or green from the modem. If it plugs into your computer directly, you do not have a router. Otherwise look for the brand name on the device connected to the ethernet cable.

If your computer is directly connected to the Signal Peak modem:

Windows XP:

  1. Click on the Start button.
  2. Click Control Panel (sometimes this is found under Settings)
  3. Click Network Connections
  4. Right-click on Local Area Connection
  5. Click Properties
  6. In the list find "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and double-click on wording
  7. Click on "Obtain an IP address automatically"
  8. Click on "Obtain DNS server address automatically"
  9. Click OK and Close on all windows

Windows Vista / Windows 7

  1. Click the Windows button (Start)
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. In the left pane, click on Classic View
  4. Open Network and Sharing Center
  5. In the left pane, click Manage network connections
  6. Right-click on Local Area Connection
  7. Click Properties
  8. In the list find "Internet Protocal Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" and double-click on wording
  9. Click on "Obtain an IP address automatically"
  10. Click on "Obtain DNS server address automatically"
  11. Click OK and Close on all windows

Mac

  1. Click the Apple in the top left corner of the screen
  2. Click "System Preferences..."
  3. Click "Network"
  4. Double-click "Built-in Ethernet"
  5. Set Configure IPv4 to "Using DHCP"
  6. Remove all text from textbox labeled "DNS Servers:"
  7. Click Apply Now
  8. Close window

If your computer is connected to a Linksys router:

  1. Open a web browser (Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox)
  2. In the address bar (where you would normally put a web URL such as http://www.google.com) type in "192.168.1.1"
  3. A dialog box should appear asking for a username and password. By default the username is "admin" and the password is "admin" or "password"
  4. If the login is accepted, in the center of the page click on the drop-down box that says "Static IP" and change to Automatic-DHCP
  5. Change DNS Servers below (DNS Static 1 and DNS Static 2) to 0.0.0.0
  6. Click "Save Settings"

If your computer is connected to a Netgear router:

  1. Open a web browser (Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox)
  2. In the address bar (where you would normally put a web URL such as http://www.google.com) type in "192.168.1.1"
  3. A dialog box should appear asking for a username and password. By default the username is "admin" and the password is "admin" or "password"
  4. If the login is accepted, click "Basic Settings" in the left-hand menu
  5. In the center of the page under the heading "Internet IP Address", select "Get Dynamically from ISP"
  6. Under the heading Domain Name Server (DNS) Address, select "Get Automatically from ISP"
  7. Click the "Apply" button
If after changing these setting you are still unable to get online, restart your system, starting with the modem, then your routers and/or switches (if you have them) and then all computers. If you are still unable to get online, call our office at 388-8802 and leave a message and a technician will return your call as soon as possible.
