Frequently Asked Questions
~
*
Q: What is High Speed Wireless?
A: Wireless Internet, or, broadband, is Internet access through radio waves. No phone lines or cables are needed, except for a short length of line from the antenna to your computer. You are virtually wireless. Signal Peak Internet Access is a high-speed, cost effective solution for internet access. There is no need to worry about busy signals, slow down loads, or disconnections anymore, with Wireless Internet your computer is always on the Internet.
Each Wireless subscriber has a small radio receiver and an antenna. The receiver has a network connection that plugs into a single computer or a router if you have more than one computer. The antenna sends and receives signals from the base antenna, to our servers, and the Internet.

Q: Where does the service work, and where will the service NOT work ?
A: Service is available in Silver City, Arenas Valley, Tyrone, White Signal, Dos Griegos, and surrounding areas. Service availability will be determined by a technician, free of charge, at the desired site location. At this time service is unavailable in Santa Clara, Hurley or Deming.

*
Q: Can I have more than one computer hooked up to the system ?
A: Yes, but additional equipment may be required and will not be provided by Signal Peak, Inc.

*
Q: Can I install the system myself ?
A: It is not recommended that you install the system yourself. Professional installation is included in the activation fee.

*
Q: What about email when I'm not home or travelling ?
A: At home or travelling, you can access your email via a web browser at mail.signalpeak.net.

*
Q: How long will it take to get service ?
A: Once your location has been surveyed and approved for wireless, a date will be set for installing your unit. When a service tech is on-sight, it could take from 20 minutes to 1 hour. Each location will be specific to its own needs and obstacles.

*
Q: Does the weather interfere with my service ?
A: Only under extreme circumstances will our service be affected by outside influences.

*
Q: A web-based speed test says my connection is slow. What is going on?
A: Web-based speed tests (found at dslreports.com, cnet.com, among other places) aren't always accurate measures of how fast your connection to the Internet really is. Depending on how busy the testing server is, where it is located, and your web browser, you may get very inaccurate results. Your best bet is to download a file using ftp from one of our servers (click here for a sample 8mb file) and see how many kilobytes per second are transferred. Assuming you don't have a lot of other traffic going over your connection when downloading the test file, you should see throughput like:

Service speed in kilobits/sec (Kbps) speed: Download speed kilobytes/sec (KBps)

384Kbps: 40 to 48 kilobytes per second
768Kbps: 80 to 96 kilobytes per second
1500Kbps: 160 to 180 kilobytes per second
4000Kbps: 380 to 420 kilobytes per second
7100Kbps: 650 to 850 kilobytes per second

To make things confusing, the telecommunications world uses bits per second (bps -- note the small b) to measure the speed of data moving across a network. The computing world more commonly uses bytes per second
(Bps -- note the big B). 8 bits = 1 byte.
